The Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) was the first law of its kind. Originally passed in 2000, the TVPA seeks to prevent trafficking, protect victims, prosecute traffickers, and promote partnership across governments, NGOs, and international organizations. In order to remain in effect and keep up with the changing landscape of trafficking, the TVPA must be reauthorized by Congress every few years. There are domestic and international provisions to the TVPA, and the domestic provisions were reauthorized this year. The international provisions, however, have not been reauthorized since 2021. Without the international provisions, programs and protections for victims abroad have lapsed.
